Prairie City, Oregon, Malheur National Forest
In the summer of 2019 I worked for the Forest Service as a wildland firefighter on a Type 6 Initial Attack Engine.
- Served on a Type 6 Initial Attack Engine stationed at Crane Prairie Guard Station
- Experienced with all aspects of a Model 643U Type 6 engine with Kubota diesel pump including simple and progressive hose lays, drafting, hydrant use, mobile pumping, and maintenance
- Proficient with hand tools such as Pulaski, combi, McLeod, and hoes to construct handline
- Participated in fire suppression tactics including direct attack with fireline construction
- Utilized topographic maps and compass, GPS, and Avenza digital maps
- Operated Stihl 461 chainsaw including bucking, limbing, and felling hazard trees
- Skilled with daily engine checks, mileage tracking, inventorying, and preventative maintenance
- Helped inventory and maintain the Prairie City Ranger District Cache
- Built and manifested sling loads of fencing supplies for remote fence construction
- Prepped burn units for prescribed fire including slash piling, thinning, and line construction
- Performed both ignition and holding on prescribed fires and pile burning
- Communicated with dispatch and other firefighters using Bendix King DPH and KNG M150 radios
