Wildland Fire

Prairie City, Oregon, Malheur National Forest

In the summer of 2019 I worked for the Forest Service as a wildland firefighter on a Type 6 Initial Attack Engine.

  • Served on a Type 6 Initial Attack Engine stationed at Crane Prairie Guard Station
  • Experienced with all aspects of a Model 643U Type 6 engine with Kubota diesel pump including simple and progressive hose lays, drafting, hydrant use, mobile pumping, and maintenance 
  • Proficient with hand tools such as Pulaski, combi, McLeod, and hoes to construct handline
  • Participated in fire suppression tactics including direct attack with fireline construction
  • Utilized topographic maps and compass, GPS, and Avenza digital maps
  • Operated Stihl 461 chainsaw including bucking, limbing, and felling hazard trees
  • Skilled with daily engine checks, mileage tracking, inventorying, and preventative maintenance
  • Helped inventory and maintain the Prairie City Ranger District Cache
  • Built and manifested sling loads of fencing supplies for remote fence construction
  • Prepped burn units for prescribed fire including slash piling, thinning, and line construction
  • Performed both ignition and holding on prescribed fires and pile burning
  • Communicated with dispatch and other firefighters using Bendix King DPH and KNG M150 radios
