Katmai National Park, Alaska
Summer 2022 brought the unique opportunity to work with the National Park Service in remote Alaska managing brown bears. I lived and worked at Brooks Camp, in Katmai National Park. The Brooks River is an iconic location within Katmai National Park renowned for its remarkable bear viewing opportunities. Brown bears famously congregate at Brooks Falls to catch salmon as they swim upstream to spawn.
- Managed brown bears to ensure safety and limit bear human conflict
- Regularly hazed bears out of camp using escalating levels of aggression
- Educated visitors about proper behavior and food storage around bears
- Performed aerial bald eagle surveys, sedge meadow surveys, ptarmigan surveys, stream surveys
- Conducted field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence, abundance, reproduction, and population dynamics
- Trained to maintain and safely use firearms for protection against bears
- Managed, summarized, and reported wildlife data using computer software including Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, ArcGIS to recommend wildlife management actions
- Extensive aviation and motorboat operator training
